At present I play on PandaNet as 6- or 7-dan, but although I do OK in the opening, I have a tendency to do badly when the stones get tangled with each other.
I play as 20-kyu and I win some and lose some. At present, all I do is play actual games; I realize that I need to study to improve, but I don’t know where to start, and I can’t help wondering if I will ever improve.

We are going to start treating the opening. Can you tell me what is the best order in which to study the opening (from Shusaku to the present)?

When I review my games later, I find I’m playing really poor moves. If I noticed during the game, I’d be a stone stronger. Is there any way to ensure that one plays one’s best?
What is an effective way to study to acquire the fighting strength that would enable me to match players who fight hard and go all out to capture stones?

I am nine years old.father plays with a New Zealander, but he always loses. I won three games in a row against this New Zealander. But when I play Dad, I almost always lose. Why is that?
I am teaching go to my two children. One child just tries to capture; the other plays good shape, but doesn’t try to capture stones it should. What should I do?

When there’s a game that you absolutely want to win, you tense up. My question is: what do top professionals, including yourself, do to calm yourselves.
Until now, I’ve played my own style, without studying josekis and life-and-death problems. Do you think one can’t get stronger unless one studies these subjects?

I hear that professionals always remember their game records. Is there some trick for remembering games?
I have ups and downs and about once every month I find myself losing ten games in a row, so I get demoted. Please tell me what one should do at times like this.

I can’t say I’m good at any part of the game. Can you tell me what one should be thinking about in positions like this?
Do you believe that it has something in common with the artistic side of go? Please tell me if pottery has been a plus for you in your go playing.

Sometimes when I am playing I don’t know whether I am winning or losing. At what stage of your games do you make a positional evaluation?
I play too much, my go gets careless and sloppy.Which is the shortcut for a beginner: to play only games in which you really concentrate hard or to play as many games as you can?
March Mieko
NAKAJIMA
1-dan
I really enjoy go, but as I grow older my memory gets worse, and I feel that my go has declined. I’m worried that if things go on like this I won’t be able to play go anymore.
In my games, when I try to play josekis, the opponent often diverges from them and I immediately collapse.
February Akiko
TSUKUDA
4-dan
I’ve reached only 5-kyu level (about 15-kyu on PandaNet). I would like to know if there is any way for someone of my level to improve in a relatively short period.
I think that you, Ms. Tsukuda, travel to different parts of Japan. Do you find that go styles differ in different areas?

What principles should the player with white bear in mind when giving nine stones?
I often have trouble when my opponent builds a large centre territory. Until the middle game, I concentrate on the sides and I don’t develop into the middle.
