I’ve been playing on PandaNet recently, and I’m really convinced that go is an artistic mind sport. The creative and intuitive side of go is what creates your go style and your individuality as a player. I’m convinced that go is an art.
I’ve heard that you are knowledgeable about pottery. Do you believe that it has something in common with the artistic side of go? Please tell me if pottery has been a plus for you in your go playing. |

Hello, Mr. Nakamura. I found your profound question very moving. As you imply, I think that developing your creativity is very important. There are various ways of doing this; the main thing is to be receptive.
This is true not only of go, but your spiritual attitude affects a contest. The reason why I do pottery is that I can immerse myself in the world of nothingness (sorry to sound pretentious). I believe that one’s spiritual state of mind as one makes contact with the clay is linked to go. My feelings become peaceful, that is, I achieve a state of calm.
One’s concentration also improves. If you think about anything extraneous, the potter’s wheel collapses. If I am not calm before a contest, I sometimes picture to myself a piece of pottery that I like.
I feel a yearning for the world of someone like Musashi Miyamoto, who developed his creativity and found spiritual nourishment not only from the sword, but also from calligraphy, sculpture, painting and so on.
Mr. Nakamura. When you are depressed about your go, empty your mind and think of something else. Then do your best. |
