Day Two: Expanding territory
[6]Expanding one's territory

· The side with more territory wins, so one objective for each player is increasing his territory.
· Dia. 30. Black and White have played two moves each. Please think about how to expand Black's territory. Black 1 increases his own territory. Similarly, White 2. In this way, both sides increase their territories. There are various other ways of doing this besides these two moves.
Dia. 30
· Dia. 31. This time Black expands his territory with 1. In response, White may turn the top left into his territory with 2. If, after 3 and 4, Black plays 5, doesn't Black seem to have taken more territory than in the previous diagram? He expands his territory at the top and has also played 5 at the bottom in the same way as before, so he has done well. From Black's point of view, he has succeeded in increasing his territory. Dia. 31
· Dia. 32. Well, let's think about it from White's point of view. When Black increases his top area with 1, White increases his bottom area with 2. The top is no good, so White tries to make up for that at the bottom. This is an excellent strategy. In response to Black 3, White defends his left-side position with 4. Next, both sides expand their areas with 5 and 6. Dia. 32
· (Actual game example 4) Dia. 33. The game begins with Black 1 and White 2. Black 3 tries to secure the bottom right area. White 4 stops Black from advancing here and aims at securing the left-side area. After expanding his territory at the top with 6 and 8, White blocks with 10. White has gone all out in expanding his position. Dia. 33
· Dia. 34. Next, Black expands his bottom position with 1 and 3, and White expands his top position with 4 and 6. Both sides are expanding their territories. Dia. 34
· Dia. 35. Please follow the course of the game from Black 1. Both sides decide the borders while expanding their territories as much as they can. The game is headed for a conclusion. Dia. 35
