Congratulations on defending the Women’s Honinbo title. I hope that you continue to do well in your professional career. I’m sure you must get nervous ahead of important games. How do you pass the time the day before a match? Is there a difference in your attitude now as the defending champion from when you were the challenger? |

Hello, Mr. Kato. Thank you for your question.
It may be a bit presumptuous for me to answer this question, as actually I don’t have much experience of title matches yet. However, I’ll try to answer.
When I recall my feelings last year before the Women’s Honinbo title match, my happiness at being able to play in a title match was much greater than any nervousness. I was really excited – I was on a high. Sometimes I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep, but I considered getting enough sleep another challenge to be overcome with fighting spirit.
The bigger the game, the happier I am. It’s one of the times I’m glad I became a professional go player. This feeling is unchanged whether I’m the challenger or the defender.
What makes me much more nervous than playing a title match is giving a speech at the award ceremony. I’m not very good at giving speeches in front of an audience. I wonder how I can get used to this .... |
