Ms. Chinen, I’m writing to you because I’ve heard that you have children. I have a three-year-old child, and I like go very much. I play on PandaNet every day. Recently, I received a coloured go board from PandaNet, so I thought I’d teach my child, but when I started I found it very difficult. I’d be grateful if you could give me some advice. If there some knack for teaching children or is my child too young? |

Hello, Mr. Komine. Thank you for your letter.
Teaching go to your three-year-old is marvellous. Actually I’m also in the midst of teaching go to my children. However, perhaps because other emotions intrude, I’m finding teaching really difficult.
I don’t think that three is too young. The only thing is you mustn’t continue too long (my child doesn’t last 30 minutes) and you must make it fun. I think you have to teach each child in a different way, but my policy is not to say anything unless the child asks a question. I try to give hints to help the child discover things for itself and when it does well I praise it lavishly.
There are a lot of things to look forward to, as your child can broaden its experience through go and get lots of friends. I really hope that the game becomes a lifelong treasure for your child.
I hope to hear of your child’s progress. |
