question1
I received a shodan diploma some ten years ago. In the last two or three years I have been playing go on the Net. My rating is 2-kyu. I always fall behind in the fuseki. Please tell me what are the key points of the fuseki.

answer
Hello, Mr. Tateyama. Thank you for your letter.
Playing go on the Net is fun, isn’t it? I often play on the Net myself. It’s marvellous to be able to play when you feel like it with different people from different countries. It’s an ideal way to improve.
You say that you fall behind in the fuseki. Well, the fuseki is difficult. Actually I have the same problem as you, as the opening is the weakest part of my game. I recommend you to study by playing through professional games. Going through the whole game is time-consuming, so I think it’s enough just to look at the first 30 moves or so. You can go through the openings of a number of games if you restrict yourself like this. As you keep going through professional games, you’ll gradually acquire the correct sense of direction. The most important point in the opening is not to create weak groups. I’m going to work hard on the opening myself, as I’m so bad at it. I hope you’ll study it too.
