In 2011, by a miracle, I reached the play-off in the final section of the Kisei tournament. My opponent in the game on which a place in the league depended was Rin Kono 9-dan. I had played him many practice games, and, although I had won two games, the number of games I had lost was too great to count. I resolved that I would approach this game in a state of mind of non-attachment.
Finally, the day of the game arrived. When I faced Kono 9-dan across the Go board, somehow his strength seemed to be wafted through the air . . .
I played cautiously so that I wouldn't be overwhelmed, but that meant that I played too tightly in the opening, and the position immediately became difficult for me. The game ended up as a one-sided loss, without one good scene for me.
Despite all my resolutions, I failed to play my usual game, and I felt an overwhelming gap between us, both spiritually and in Go strength.
The game left me full of regrets, but still getting so close to playing in a league was a valuable experience for me.
