I am 64 years old and my rank on the Net at present is 1-kyu. I started out as 2-dan, but I lost a lot of games and went down to 1-kyu. I have been playing go on the Net for four years. I’ve managed to get back to 1-dan for a time, but then my level seems to fluctuate. I try to play an attacking game, but I can’t get up to 2-dan. I’m studying go night and day while thinking of various things, such as not attacking too much and not taking gote. Could you give me some advice on the most effective way to study go?I wish you every success in your professional career. |

Hello, Mr. Ishiyama. Thank you for your question.
I’m very impressed by your efforts to study go night and day. I only wish I could emulate you. I have a mental picture of you going all out to play attacking go and not being discouraged by defeat. I also often play on the Net. When I lose a lot and my rank goes down, I really get upset, but I don’t try to learn from my experience. I should emulate you in your desire to improve.
I think it’s a very good thing to aim at playing attacking go. I guess you really like to play powerful moves. The best way of studying I can recommend is to play as many games on the Net as you can. If you don’t have stable results, then try studying simple life-and-death problems or playing through the games of a professional you like. This would make a good change from playing all the time.
I’m going to do all I can to emulate you in studying go night and day. I wish you the best of luck. |
