Hello, Ms. Mannami. I started playing go recently and I’m still a beginner. In my games, I’m always capturing and being captured. Senior players tell me that I should focus on taking territory instead, but my games just don’t turn out like that. Can you give me any advice? |

Hello, Mr. Ito. Thank you for consulting me.
I see you’ve just started playing go. How are you enjoying it? Actually, when I first started playing, my games also were all full of capturing and being captured. The advice of your seniors is valuable, but I think that the way you play is OK as it is.
Go is a funny thing. There are times when you suddenly become aware of something and you become able to play a different type of game. I used to be a real fighter, but at a certain point I started to understand how to follow a territorial strategy.
Please forgive me if my answer seems a little vague. Please keep on playing your natural style. If you do so, you are bound to come to understand the territorial strategy your seniors are talking about. |
