Hello, Ms. Kobayashi. I play as a 7-kyu, but I often lose because I rescue junk stones. What is the knack for distinguishing between pivotal stones and junk stones? Can you give me some advice? I wish you the best of luck with your professional career. |

Hello. Mr. Saito.
The difference between pivotal stones and junk stones is not a simple one. One key point is the strength or weakness of the enemy stones with which one comes into contact. If the opponent’s group doesn’t have eyes, then your own stones that are in contact with it are necessary, that is, pivotal stones, for attacking it.
In contrast, stones that are clinging to a strong enemy position or a wall are junk stones.
The only problem is that if you have a large number of junk stones, then they are heavy and hard to discard. You have to judge everything case by case. The more progress you make, the more skilful you become at discarding stones and settling weak groups.
Don’t be afraid of failure. Instead, try to gain as much experience as possible in differentiating between pivotal and junk stones. |
