Hello, Ms. Nakajima. Recently I reached 3-dan on PandaNet. Usually I study by playing over games, but somehow I feel that I’m just laying out the moves without concentrating and that I’m not improving. What is the right way to approach playing over games if one wants to improve effectively? |

Congratulations on your promotion to 3-dan. Studying by playing over games is marvellous. You may feel you’re not really concentrating, but I think that doing this helps you pick up the right feel for the game. If you want to do something extra, I recommend replaying the same game a number of times and thinking about where you would play yourself before you look at the next move. This will help you appreciate the good moves and understand what the players are thinking about. Of course, playing over a large number of games is good, but really coming to grips with one game and trying to understand it deeply is also beneficial.
I hope you continue to improve. |
