question1
I have a problem with the opening. I never know whether to build a moyo or to destroy the opponent’s territory. I’m about 1-dan in theory, but I’m not very strong. When I set up a moyo, the opponent invades and settles his group. This really upsets me. What is the right approach?

Thank you for your question, Mr. Yamamoto.

The opening is far from easy. Attacking the opponent’s position because you are jealous of his territory is perhaps an all-out, aggressive way of playing. But I get the impression that you are actually fond of moyos. It’s certainly true that if the opponent lives inside after you have gone to the trouble of mapping out a large territory you really feel as if you have suffered a major loss. However, go is a game in which you win if you just have a little bit more territory than the opponent. So, assuming you have built a moyo from which you could expect to realize 60 points, if the opponent has 30 points, then it doesn’t matter if that moyo if reduced to 40 points.

The other thing is that an invasion is usually a little unreasonable. In that case, you are bound to get some compensation somewhere even if the invader lives or escapes. Instead of trying to kill all the invading group, think about letting it live on a small scale; quite often you will find that you get sufficient profit elsewhere.

Go is a long, drawn-out game. In the opening, one builds the basis for the game. You will enjoy the game more if you set up the sort of position that you like.

I hope that you continue to enjoy go.
