I am now 5-kyu. My goal is to make 1-dan. Please tell me what the most effective way of studying is. I think it’s around 5-kyu that you start to appreciate the real interest and depth of go. Playing go should become more and more fun for you. When you are 5-kyu, I think that any study method will help you to get stronger. In other words, there are still so many unknown areas of the game that you need to study a wide range of techniques. What kind of study do you like? Learning josekis? Going over life-and-death and tesuji problems? Playing through professional games? There are various ways of studying, but I recommend you to choose the area that you like. If you are enjoying yourself, it’s easy to remember what you have learnt and you will keep it up over the long term. Personally, when I was a child, I disliked studying josekis, so I hardly ever looked at joseki books. However, I really liked playing over professional games, so I learned josekis unconsciously. The important thing is to find a study method you like and to have fun while you’re improving. Good luck!
