This painting is titled "Duo Zi Tu", and literally means "Many Children
Painting". To have a lot of children was good luck and a filial duty
in China. People newly married usually received this kind of
painting as a sign of blessing. There are many different
versions of "Duo Zi Tu" in China. A pomegranate has many seeds, and
it is often used as the symbol of "Duo Zi" (many children). The "Zi" in the title "Duo Zi Tu" means "children". "Zi" is also the first sign of the twelve Asian zodiac symbols, which is "mouse" or "mice". That is why a pomegranate and mice are used in the painting. However, Go stones in China are also called "Zi".
