The "47 Loyal Samurai" (Chushingura) were led through suffering
and hardship by their chief councilor, Oishi Kuranksuke, to ultimately
avenge their lord, Asano Takuminokami, after he was unjustly forced to
commit ritual suicide. On December 14th, 1702, the Loyal 47 avenged
their lord by beheading Kira Kozukenosuke, the man responsible for their
lord's death during a night attack on Lord Kira's heavily guarded mansion. This picture depicts Onodera Koemon Hidetomi, one of the Loyal 47, during the night attack.
